Lani Markland, reporter, has been given the assignment of writing an article about the McClain Boys’ Ranch near Bagley, Texas – primarily about the fundraiser they do every year to benefit those in their care. It sounds like a fun assignment . . . until she gets there and realizes that things aren’t quite what they seem.
Frank McClain has his hands full calming the emotional thunderstorms on the ranch, but all that practice hasn’t prepared him for someone like Lani. With her laser-sharp focus and probing questions, she throws him off balance and sets his world spinning.
Two people with more in common than they realize, and two hearts seeking a place to call home.

I have enjoyed the Seven Sons series so much, and it’s kind of sad to know that there are only Frank’s and Gideon’s stories left to be told. I’ll be picking up Gideon’s in a couple minutes and that’s going to be a bittersweet read. But in the meantime, we have Frank and Lani’s story to enjoy.
The McClain’s ranch is about to be visited by a reporter who will prove a bit of a challenge for one brother. Lani is marking time at the job she has now and is hoping that this article will pave her way to the next level. There just has to be something going on at this boy’s ranch, it’s simply too good to be true and if there’s dirt, well she has the shovel. She’s actually very surprised by what she does find at the ranch – which is a lot of people who care deeply about the boys in their care. One brother definitely catches her attention, and she finds more in common with Frank than she ever expected. She’s enjoying a light flirtation, finding out more about the family’s history and watching some amazing things happen on the ranch. She is placed in a hard spot when her editor demands a second story… one that will blow the lid off of the McClain’s family privacy if she writes about what she’s learned. Lani had decisions to make, and a future to hope for.
I really enjoyed Frank and Lani’s story. They fit together from the start, their romance is a wee bit played down for there are some truly amazing breakthroughs happening at the ranch. We’ve come to know and care about some of these boys on the ranch, and in this story one young man finally has hit that breaking moment that we’ve been waiting for. Not only is it heartbreaking, and touching how this was handles but also how helping him has opened up some knowledge to a few brothers as well. Very well thought out and presented.
In all, I enjoyed my time with Frank, Lani and the McClain family. I’m looking forward to Gideon’s story – but not to the ending of the series. I’ve enjoyed it too much to easily let go.
