Eager for a fresh start, young widow and mother, Melanie Larson, leaves Calgary to relocate for a dream job at a family-owned, historic hotel in a small mountain resort town in the Canadian Rockies. But her new boss is the sweet talker who broke her heart in college—and who holds the power to crush it again. Long dormant feelings surface, and Melanie is torn between needing this job and protecting her still fragile heart.
Ben Thurston wants a second chance with the woman he’s never stopped loving, but there’s no statute of limitations on a secret. Keeping it hidden while pursing Melanie would be dishonest. Revealing it will expose them to pain and heartache.
If Ben’s secret is revealed, will Melanie understand Ben’s past rejection? Could there be a possible future together for them? Or will his deception and their conflicting dreams keep them apart?

Sometimes life gives us a second chance to be with the person who matters most. What we do with that chance will often define exactly who we truly are.
Melanie is starting over. After the tragic death of her husband, she’s looking at a perfect for her job opportunity, one that would work so well for her and her young daughter. The only drawback is that this position would put her in constant, daily contact with the man she’d given her heart to back in college – the one who might have been perfect for her if he’d simply made the effort to get to know her, instead of being the constant joker. But back then she’d been holding onto a secret, one so painful that it affected her reactions to everyone around her. Now, there’s something still between them and she needs to figure out if keeping that long held secret is worth missing out on a second chance.
Ben Thurston has spent his life never reaching out for his potential. His family owned and ran the beautiful Thurston Hotel in Harmony, but he’s not stepped up to do his part in any meaningful way. He’s let his sisters speak for and over him for years now, but that’s about to change. Question is, will he man up and take charge… not only of the hotel, but his future as well. When Melanie applied for the job as Ben’s assistant he knew she’d be perfect in so many ways… but they had a past, and he had a secret that had prevented him from telling her just how he’d felt about her back in college. This could be the chance to make things right between them, but he had to decide if the risk of rejection was worth the possibilities of a life with the woman he’d always loved.
Welcome to Harmony and the location for this twelve book series that will take us deeper into the lives of many citizens of this quaint small town. This series is exactly why I love connecting stories. Believable situations, average people facing extraordinary circumstances, finding that just right for you person in the last place you thought to ever find them. The possibilities here are endless, and I cannot wait to dive in to the stories and lives of this small town.
Ben and Melanie’s romance introduces us to many secondary characters who will become familiar to us over time. With one main thread woven throughout the series, and a more in depth visit with many characters, this town will soon feel as natural as walking down our own neighborhood streets.
I enjoyed A Thurston Promise very much. There are times when secrets protect us from hurt or harm, and times when keeping those secrets from the people who matter most to us is a dangerous decision. Melanie had good reason to keep information from Ben. Yet when he discovered what she was hiding, his love was still strong. Ben kept his secret as a type of sacrifice, but he never asked the one woman it would have affected if he should have made that sacrifice. The past brought them to where they are today, but their past could have kept them apart until they learned to trust each other with everything. I found Melanie and Ben’s situation very believable, and honestly, I don’t know how I would have reacted myself.
If you enjoy Romance that is believable, with characters who could populate your own home town, a little danger, a lot of intrigue, some secrets and some really annoying people (every town has them) – then A Thurston Promise and this series should be on your reading list. It’s funny, poignant, heartbreaking and uplifting. Just about everything I want from a story, especially one that starts off a long series. But don’t take my word for it, go check it out for yourself.
I read this story through my Kindle Unlimited subscription. For ten dollars a month you get access to thousands of really great stories across all genre, and the authors gets paid for you reading the story through to the 100% mark. It’s a win-win. Probably the best 10 bucks I spend a month.
